Weekly Release 1/28: vs. Stevens

NP Swimming vs. Stevens Tech SAT @ 1:00pm

At long last… New Paltz will be home this weekend against Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday at 1:00pm. With the Rowan meet being canceled, this is one of 2 home meets for the Hawks.  Previously, New Paltz fell to Coast Guard in a closely contested meet on November 7th.

Format:  200 Medley Relay, 1000 Free, 200 Free, 50 Free, 200 IM, 100 Fly, 100 Free, 100 Back, 500 Free, 100 Breast, 200 Free Relay

7 Seniors to be honored:

The seven senior men and women of the team will be honored for their commitment to the NP Swimming program and athletic department during the first break of the meet (approximately 1:45pm).

Notable Performances:  Finalist in the 500 Free at 2008 SUNYAC Championships.  Consolation finalist in 500 and 200 free last year.  Finished 3rd as member of 800 Free Relay last year. 1 year team Captain.

Events:  100 Fly, 100 Back, 200 IM, 200 Back

Major:  Marketing

Notable Performances:  Won the 100 Fly and 100 Back at the 2009 SUNYAC Championships.  Won 100 Back at the 2008 SUNYAC Championships.  Varsity record holder in 100 fly, 100 back, and 200 Medley Relay.  2 year team Captain.

Notable Performances:  Won the 200 IM at the 2008 SUNYAC Championships.  Finalist in 200 IM and 400 IM at the 2009 Championships.

Major: Communications Disorders

Notable Performances: Swam the 200 Free, 200 Back, and 1650 Free at 2009 SUNYAC Championships.  Has taken up the IM discipline this season and scored in the 400 IM at the 2009 ECAC Championships.

Notable Performances: Finalist in the 1650 at the 2008 and 2009 SUNYAC Championships.  Consolation Finalist in the 400 IM in 2008 and 2009 as well.  #2 All-Time Performer at NP in the 1650 Free.  Team Captain.

Women’s Swimming

Junior swimmer Marissa Morris won all four events she took part in at the Cortland meet on Saturday. The Hawks fell to the Red Dragons 144-140. She won the 200 Yard Freestyle in 2:00.35, which was nearly two seconds faster than second place. In the 100 Yard Freestyle, she touched in at 55.50, a second faster than second place. She touched in at 2:17.79 in the 200 Yard IM, which was an outstanding seven seconds faster than second place. She was apart of the relay team that took first in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay in 3:45.21, 13 seconds faster then second place.

NP Swimming vs. Cortland FRI 6:00pm @ Cortland

In the final away meet of the season, NP Swimming will travel to Cortland for a meet this Friday January 22.  There will be a 6:00pm start.

Format:  200 Medley Relay, 1000 Free, 200 Free, 100 Back, 100 Breast, 200 Fly, 50 Free, Diving, 100 Free, 200 Back, 200 Breast, 500 Free, 100 Fly, Diving, 200 IM, 400 Free Relay.

At Stake:

At this year’s ECAC Championships, New Paltz defeated both Cortland’s men and women.  The men scored 1025 to Cortland’s 598, and the women had 1143 to Cortland’s 1016.  Last year, the NP women defeated Cortland at home 120.5-84.5 while the men lost 116-89.  The men have not beaten Cortland in a duel meet since 2001.  The women had lost 4 straight duels to Cortland before beating them last year.

Next week: Senior Day vs. Stevens Tech

On January 30th, in the final meet of the 2009-2010 duel meet season, NP will face Stevens Tech on Senior Day @ 1:00pm in the Elting Pool.  At the meet, during the first intermission (approx 1:45pm), we will honor these seniors for their commitment to the NP Swimming Program:

Weekly Release 1/13: New Paltz @ RIT w/ Geneseo

NP Travels to Rochester for Tri-Meet with RIT and Geneseo:

The duel meet season resumes as New Paltz will travel to Rochester, NY this Saturday for a tri-meet against Rochester Institute of Technology and SUNY Geneseo.  The meet will be at 1:00 on Saturday on the campus of RIT.

Format:

400 Medley Relay

1650 Free

200 Free

50 Free

400 IM

1M Diving

200 Fly

100 Free

200 Back

500 Free

3M Diving

200 Breast

400 Free Relay

Scoring:

Unlike the tri-meet with Stevens and NYU, this meet will be scored as a double-duel between the teams.  Relays (11-4-2) and Individuals (9-4-3-2-1) will be scored in regular duel meet fashion.

Last Year:

The men’s and women’s swim teams hosted the Geneseo and were swept by the Blue Wave. The women lost 143-117 while the men fell 131.5-116.5.

The women’s team started off strong with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay of Marissa Morris, Becky Baker, Erica Ellis and Christine Rieth who posted a time of 1:55.32. Morris and Rieth combined with Allison Wells and Samantha Graham to win the 400 free relay in 3:44.70. Jessica Lester and Melinda Pullen finished one-two in the 1650 in 18:42.67 and 18:48.64, respectively. Senior Joelle Hopf was the final lone winner for the Hawks as she claimed the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.50. Lester took second in the 200 back (2:18.30).

On the men’s side Stephen Cozzolongo was the lone winner for the Hawks as he claimed the 100 fly in 54.10. He touched second in the 100 back (55.14). First year Pete Nastasti finished second in the 500 free (5:03.40) and took third in the 1650 (17:31.30). The men’s 200 medley relay of Cozzolongo, Rob Webb, Gardner and Billy Papetti finished second (1:40.57) as Geneseo took first in 1:40.23. Papetti and Gardner teamed up with Pat Rathbun and Zack Lowenstein for a second place finish in the 400 free relay (3:26.50).

Geneseo returns to action after posting a 1st place finish out of 13 teams on the women’s side and a 2nd place finish of 11 teams on the men’s side at the ECAC Winter Championship meet back on December 4th-6th.  Results can be found here:

NP Women Swimming to be named CSCAA Academic All-American Team

The NP Women’s Swimming program will yet again be named a CSCAA Academic All-American team.  To be recognized by the CSCAA, a team has to maintain a combined 3.00 grade point average.  This fall, the NP women combined for a 3.20 team GPA.  Individually, they were led by senior Eryka Eikeseth (4.00), junior Lori Brown (3.92), senior Lauren Doolittle (3.80), senior Megan Gordon (3.66), and junior Marissa Morris (3.64).

The men fell short of All-American team status, but were led by junior Rob Webb (3.66), sophomore Pete Nastasi (3.61), sophomore Jeremy Borrelli (3.60), and sophomore Jesse Sweeney (3.60). Full results can be found here

Florida Training Trip 2010

We didn’t quite have the weather you might expect for Florida, but we survived the 2010 training trip.  Here are some pics from the trip.
