Gina Ciccarelli class of 2003

Gina Ciccarelli class of 2003

A new feature we will be continually updating is our “Where are they now” section. This follows and updates where our alumni are based, what they are up to and giving other alumni a chance to reconnect.

Our first player in this feature is Gina Ciccarelli class of 2003. Gina was a major player throughout her senior year anchoring the bottom half of our line up. Gina played #6 singles on our historic record-breaking SUNYAC Conference Championship winning team of 2002. She narrowly lost in the final of the #6 singles conference championships, but her points tally over the championship weekend help our program and the college to win its first ever SUNYAC Conference Championship. Gina also spent the 2005 season as assistant coach to the New Paltz Tennis program.

Gina is currently living in Arizona and works as a Guidance Counselor at Safford High School, Safford, Arizona. “I have been here since July of 2008. I love my job and I am currently helping coach the girl’s and boy’s JV and varsity tennis team at the high school.  I am engaged and going to be married in June of 2010”.

Spring 2009

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Last Saturday we completed our spring schedule by winning the New Paltz Invitational Tournament. The tournament comprised of two divisions of 3 teams playing round robin format with the top team from each division playing in the final. This was a team event and was contested by 5 other strong tennis programs: Cortland, Oneonta, Hunter, Mt St Mary, Hunter College and RIT. Two successive 6-1 wins against RIT and Mt St Mary saw New Paltz advance to the final to meet Cortland, winner of the other bracket. A very hotly contested final saw New Paltz finish as 6-1 winners to win the Invitational Tournament for the 2nd year in a row.

The day before our tournament was our senior day and we had a dual match with Hunter College who after winning their CUNY Conference will be competing for the 3rd successive year at the NCAA Tennis Championships. After getting off to a great start winning all 3 double matches we went on to win 5 out of 6 single matches to win the match 8-1, our only lose on the day was at #1 singles where our senior Dana lost a very close match 6-4, 6-4 to one of the top Div III players in the Northeast.

Overall our spring season was a success. Our playing schedule in the spring has the team competing against 4 teams looking to advance to the NCAA Tennis Championships, St Lawrence, Skidmore, Ithaca and Hunter College and very strong opposition in Steven’s Tech and Union College. Overall I was pleased the way the spring season went and how the program stayed very competitive against strong opposition. These types of strong matches will help us maintain our competitive edge as we enter the fall of 2009.

I would like to announce that our captains for 2009/10 season will be our two seniors, Lyndsey Lovinger, Miller Place and Kerri Serkes, Massapequa. Both players played a major part in our back-to-back SUNYAC Conference Championship winning seasons of 2006 & 2007. Both Lyndsey and Kerri will bring plenty of experience to their role as captains both on and off the court and have both enjoyed SUNYAC Conference success, Lyndsey winning #4 SUNYAC singles title, #2 SUNYAC doubles title in 2007 and in 2006 #3 SUNYAC doubles title, Kerri has was the 2008 #5 SUNYAC singles championship and in 2006 the #6 SUNYAC singles championship. Kerri was also awarded back-to-back SUNYAC Scholar Athlete awards in 2007 & 2008. We look forward to their continued success on the program and to their leadership qualities. Both Kerri and Lyndsey teamed up as our #2 doubles team this spring and formed a very successful partnership over our 6 match schedule. We look forward to them renewing their doubles partnership in the fall.
