Last Game for senior Rebecca Kafko

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Captain and lone senior Rebecca Kafko steps on the field for the last time after four years of dedication and leadership.

She exemplifies a consistent model of what it means to be a hard worker; always giving 110% in every game, practice and run.

Rebecca AKA Bex, has played an important role in the organization and discipline of the team this year, but most importantly she was our eldest sister and will be greatly missed.

We will all miss you Bex!

Congratulations to freshmen keeper Stephanie Vega for receiving SUNYAC Player-of-the-week!

This past week our team has gone undefeated against Vassar, Salem State and Wellesely College.

Tomorrow is our first SUNYAC game against the top seed in the conference Oneonta, we encourage everyone to come out and support. It is going to be a great game!

Hawks tie University of Rochester in Flower City Classic.

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

This past weekend we attended the Flower City Classic hosted by the University of Rochester. The first day we played Kings College of Pennsylvania resulting in a 2-0 win. Goals were scored by Freshmen Samantha Abravanel and Katie Oliver. (Congratulations to Sam and Katie for their first college goals!)

Though it was great to get our first win, the true test was our Sunday game against the University of Rochester. U of R is ranked 4th in New York State and qualifies for the national tournament religiously. However our back four Brittany Bennet, Shannon Cobb, Beth Bowling and Erin Tornatore managed to keep the yellow jackets at bay, keeping it to a 1-0 lead by the end of the first half.

Then late in the second half Rebecca Devlin got a ball in the box and managed to head it into the net giving us a tie game! (Great goal Becca!) After two over times the score remained 1-1, and both teams were forced to settle for the tie.

We placed second in the tournament due to a one goal difference, freshmen goalkeeper Stephanie Vega won defensive MVP and it was an overall happy bus ride home.

This weekend showed the capability of our team and we can’t wait for our home opener today against Vassar! Lets go Hawks!

Promising Outlook for 2009 Women’s Soccer Season

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

After a 90 degree grueling pre-season the final cuts have been made and our team is on the brink of beginning our 2009 season; the current team containing nine freshman and one transfer.

With the loss of quiet a few key seniors, the team has undergone major modifications. However, coach Bruley is more than confident that this team will be the best team New Paltz has seen thus far.

We have had two scrimmages against two extremely competitive teams. The first resulted in a tie (1-1). The second in a 2-0 loss against number 25 in the nation, Skidmore. Although we did lose the second game, the quality of play was up to par and what I believe to be a  glimpse of a winning team in the making was apparent.

Right now we are  looking to work hard off the mid field, continue to have a strong defensive back four and most importantly score some goals! Our first official game is this Tuesday against Ramapo College, and I know that we are all looking forward to seeing what this team is truly capable of.

Moretti Receives the Spirit of Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Award
05/08/09

The Spirit of Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Award is presented to someone who is a team player with intangible qualities that contribute to the teams’ success – not necessarily the best player, but the most spirited. Vargas-Robin was a four-year member for the women’s soccer team and following her untimely death, her family established the award to honor the memory of one of New Paltz’s student-athletes. Each year, the award is given to a member of the women’s soccer team who mirrors Michelle’s commitment, dedication and enthusiasm for the sport of soccer. This year’s recipient was Jennifer Moretti.   Moretti has been a three-year member of the women’s soccer team, starting 50 of the 55 games she has played in at defense. In addition to her great defensive skills, she has totaled 16 points on six goals and four assists. She is a two-time All-SUNYAC selection, was the SUNYAC Chancellors scholar athlete in 2007 and earned All-East Region Scholar athlete honorable mention. But it’s more than just stats and honors, it’s the intangibles that count. As her coach Colleen Bruely stated, “When we say her name – we smile, when she speaks – we laugh, when she runs – we laugh, – we are always laughing and smiling when she is around. Her presence, and the spirit that she has for our program, has made the last three years so enjoyable and she has added so much to our team.” She holds a 3.52 grade point average as a dual major in Spanish and Communication. She is a three-time member of the SUNYAC All-Academic team and a two-time member of the SUNYAC Commissioner’s List. Moretti is the daughter of William and Michelle Moretti of Sayville, N.Y.
